COURSE INFORMATION SHEET 3: Art and Design
What is Art and Design?
Everything that is made or produced for our use or entertainment has been ‘designed'. Products as varied as chairs and magazines, sportswear and web sites have been ‘designed'. Usually the designer has studied Art and Design or some aspect of it. Following a course in Art and Design could be the first step towards an exciting areer in the creative industries.
What qualities will I need?
You need to be creative and open to trying new ideas. Being able to draw helps a great deal and this is the main way in which artists and designers develop and communicate their ideas. Drawing is one of the skills you will develop on the course but you will use all types of media including computers and cameras.
You will be interviewed for these courses and you will need to take some of your work to the interview and be able to say why you want to study Art and Design.
What will I need to wear?
Artists and designers usually dress in a casual way because when you are working with paint and glue and messy materials you can easily destroy your good gear! It is no good saying I can't possibly work with clay today as I have got my best suit on!
What range of courses are available?
Through the TVC there is a wide range of Art and Design courses depending upon your achievements when you start the course. These include:
Level 1 courses - these will enable you explore you interests and abilities
Level 2 courses which will allow you to develop a good level of competence from which you can progress to a range of higher level courses..
What opportunities will this course open for me?
Most Art and Design students will need to continue into Further and Higher education to qualify for employment in the creative industries.
Artists and designers tend to specialise and work alone as ‘freelance workers' or in small teams. You may need some entrepreneurial and business skills which the higher level courses will help you develop.
