COURSE INFORMATION SHEET:  Teaching Assistant or Youth Worker

What is a teaching assistant?

Teaching assistants support and help teachers in their work. This may be in the classroom helping to organise and distribute resources and collecting them afterwards or outside the classroom preparing teaching materials. They may be asked to help children with  some activities  or provide the necessary help when close supervision is important during practical work or on school trips.

What qualities will I need?
You will need good communication skills. Personal organisation is important but above all you must be able to develop reliability and responsibility.

What will I need to wear?
You will be working in a variety of situations. There may be occasions when you are working with messy art or craft materials and other times when you are supporting sports activities. You must be free to work in these situations but look responsible.

What range of courses are available?
Through TVC training provider there are:

  • Level 2 Courses that qualify you to do a 'skilled job'.

  • Level 3 courses that qualify you to carry out a supervisory level job or could provide access to higher education.

What opportunities will this course open for me?
Most students progress to employment in schools or colleges but there will be opportunities for further training.  Continuing to degree level and beyond is possible.
