COURSE INFORMATION SHEET 21:  Welding

 

What is welding?
Welding is the joining of metal, using extreme heat to fuse the separate pieces. Welding is used in the construction and repair of all types of metal objects. The motor repair, ship building and construction industry are amongst those employing large numbers of welders. Welding is a highly skilled job and it can be dangerous. No one should attempt welding without being fully qualified.

What qualities will I need?
Welding requires good hand eye coordination and the ability to cope with hot and sometimes uncomfortable conditions. You will need to learn how to read plans and diagrams and be able to select the correct metals and equipment.

What will I need to wear?
You will need to wear full protective clothing including ‘gauntlets' and a special face mask. There is a risk of burning or eye damage and safety is a key factor in your training.

Level 1 Course in Performing Engineering Operations (Welding)

What opportunities will this course open for me?
Most students progress to an apprenticeship in the motor repair or metal fabrication industry. Welders are in demand and can earn impressive wages.
