What is Floristry? Flowers are important for any occasion. They help decorate and bring life indoors and help make people feel comfortable and happy. They may be grown in this country or imported from all over the world. Arranging and selling flowers is a specialist part of the retail industry.

What special skills will I need? Floristry is a very practical job. You will be sorting flowers, trimming and arranging them. You will need to be well co-ordinated and have  a sense of design. You will also be dealing with customers so good communication skills are important.

What courses are available? The TVC has Floristry Courses available at Levels 1 and 2 but the qualification is being updated in line with QCF requirements. Please call the TVC office for the latest information.

What will I need to wear? You will need to look fairly smart when you are dealing with customers but you will also be working with fresh flowers and compost which may mark clothes. An apron or overall or sometimes a uniform is often provided.

What job opportunities are there? Every town has florists shops that not only sell cut flowers direct to the public but provide specialist services for weddings, etc.. Each will take on a new trainee from time to time. There are links with horticulture - the growing and preparing of plants, fruits and flowers. The Tamar Valley and Elburton area of Plymouth have many growing areas that require skilled staff.
