COURSE INFORMATION SHEET 18:   Retail

What is retail?
Retail is the business activity that sells products directly to the customer. Usually this is face to face in a shop, but may be on the telephone or internet. Most retail workers will be employed in shops and will begin their careers serving customers. Behind the scenes are many working at  buying in the items to sell, deciding marketing strategies and managing the business. It is huge industry with a wide variety of job opportunities.

What qualities will I need?
You will need to develop good communication skills. You may need to read and explain product information to customers and will need to develop good ‘product knowledge' very quickly. You will need patience to deal with customers with special needs or difficulties

What will I need to wear?
Customers must have confidence in you and so you will need to dress appropriately. A uniform may be required.

What range of courses are available?
Through the TVC there are courses that include: 

Level 1 courses that qualify you to do a basic job serving customers and handling stock

Level 2 courses to qualify you to do a skilled job once you have had a little more experience. You may be involved in display and stock control.

Level 3 courses that will provide you with a supervisory qualification once sufficient experience has been gained.

What opportunities will this course open for me?
Most students will progress on to an apprenticeship or work with a retail company that will offer further training. Some with Level 3 will find work in a junior position until they have gained sufficient experience or may progress to Further or Higher Education.
