COURSE INFORMATION SHEET 7: Construction
What is Construction?
The Construction industry is responsible for erecting and maintaining our towns and cities. It builds roads, bridges, houses, factories, offices and schools. Those employed in the building industry include labourers, skilled craftsmen, site supervisors, project directors, planners and architects. It is could well be the industries with the greatest range of occupations. TVC courses can provide a start to a rewarding career through options in bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, painting and decorating, plumbing and electrical installation.
What qualities will I need?
You will need to be a practical person with the ability to develop good skills with your hands. You will need some strength and stamina as work in this industry can be physically demanding. If you want to start with plumbing or electrical work you will need good mathematical skills as there are many calculations to make.
What will I need to wear?
For health and safety reasons you will have to wear overalls, safety boots and at times a hard hat.
What range of courses are available?
Through the TVC Construction courses are available at two levels and you will be able to specialise in the trade you wish to take up.
Entry Level courses for those with few GCSE passes and need to develop basic skills.
Level 1 courses will qualify you to do a basic job but may lead to an apprenticeship
What opportunities will this course open for me?
Most Construction students will progress on to an apprenticeship or work with a company that will offer further training. This is another industry where it is possible to start at the bottom and work your way to the top. A TVC course is a good start.
