COURSE INFORMATION SHEET 4:  Beauty Therapy

What is Beauty Therapy?
Beauty Therapy is a rapidly expanding service industry. People are keen to look their best and it is now recognised that this can make an important difference to all aspects of life. Professional therapists help people improve their presentation by treating their skin, hair and nails with a wide range of techniques and products. Beauty therapists work from salons, hotels, holiday resorts and cruise ships.

What qualities will I need?
You will be dealing directly with customers on a very personal level and so you need to develop exceptional communication skills. Although there is a great deal of practical work to develop the manual skills there is a lot to learn. You will need to learn about the body and its reaction to different treatments. There is some theory to cover and a knowledge of science would be helpful

What will I need to wear?
You must give the customers confidence and look professional. For these and health and safety reasons you will have to wear a uniform.

What range of courses are available?
Through the TVC there is a wide range of Beauty Therapy courses depending upon your achievements and your needs. These include:

Level 1 courses will qualify you to do a basic job and may lead to an apprenticeship

Level 2 courses qualify you to do a skilled job once you have had a little more experience. You will need to have completed Level 1 or impress at interview to be accepted on to this level course.

Level 3 courses will qualify you to do a highly skilled or supervisory job once you have had sufficient experience. You will need to have completed a Level 2 course or have good GCSEs to be accepted onto a Level 3 course.

What opportunities will this course open for me?
Most Beauty Therapy students will progress on to an apprenticeship or work with a company that will offer further training. Some successful Level 3 students have found work in holiday resorts and on cruise ships.
