Child Protection in Work Related Learning Environment
Child Protection Officer Each provider is to nominate a Child Protection Officer. Appropriate training for that officer will be provided and he or she will made known to learners as someone to whom concerns or worries can be taken.
Appropriateness Placements must be selected that are appropriate to the individual's learning needs and capacity to cope with and benefit from the experience
Supervision Good supervision is essential to enable the placement to be successful and to reduce the risks of problems arising. Those placed in immediate charge of learners should be confident in dealing with young people and have a mature approach
Behaviour Learners should feel comfortable and confident in work experience placements but relationships with adults should remain professional and not over-familiar. Adults should not arrange to meet learners out of hours. ‘Horseplay' can cause embarrassment and fear.
Physical Contact There may be occasions when contact is necessary to guide a hand or arm or to provide safe support. This should be kept to a minimum and be clearly used in a manner appropriate to the situation.
One to One Situations Where possible, learners should not be left alone with an adult in an isolated or closed environment. If possible doors should be left open so that you can be seen and heard
Travel If travel alone with a learner is unavoidable, ensure a third party knows of the destination and estimated time of arrival. Check in with someone on arrival
Reporting concerns Young people may disclose information or reveal something (injury) which gives rise to concern for safety or welfare. Leading questions should not be asked but some clarification of the disclosure may be sought. Concerns should be recorded in writing in an appropriate and confidential place. A manager or senior colleague must be informed and asked to contact the learners home school/community college as soon as possible.
If out of school hours and the concern is serious the Social Services Advice and Assessment Team should be contacted. Telephone 01752 308600
